20 Tips to protect your home when you travel

When it comes time to take that deserved vacation we have many things to think about, many last minute details that we have to solve. However, among the choice of tourist destination, the search for airline tickets and hotel selection usually forget something very important: home security.

This oblivion is a detail known and exploited many wrongdoers so it is not strange that thefts and accidents are much more frequent when the houses are empty.

Basic measures to protect the home

Ensuring safety at home does not only mean protecting our home from possible thefts, but also from accidents. Fortunately, if you follow these basic measures of protection you can minimize the risks:

  1. Turn off all lights
  2. Use a light timer to indicate that someone is at home
  3. Connect a radio to the timer to give the feeling that the house is occupied
  4. Disconnect all equipment from electrical outlets
  5. Close the water and gas master keys
  6. Close all windows (both internal and external)
  7. Empty the refrigerator and disconnect it
  8. Install and activate an alarm system
  9. Hire a security company for the time you will be out and connect it to the alarm system
  10. Secure all valuables inside a safe
  11. Do not leave valuables visible from outside the house
  12. Prune the trees and clean the garden to prevent an accident in the event of a storm and eliminate the possibility that these become a “natural ladder” to facilitate thieves access to the house
  13. Delete subscriptions to newspapers or magazines if you will be away for a long time or ask someone to regularly empty the mailbox
  14. Do not leave keys to the house outside
  15. Do not advertise on the Internet or in public places you will be away from home
  16. Close the garage and the security door
  17. Install protection bars on windows, especially if you live in a neighborhood with a high theft index
  18. Leave a generic message on the answering machine that does not mention that you are away from home or use the call forwarding service
  19. Ask someone you trust to check the house often and leave the data for you to locate in case of emergency
  20. If you are going out in the winter season, you should leave someone in charge to clean the front of the house in case of snowfall

You can also carry out a home insurance that covers thefts or any type of accidents such as fires and damages caused by atmospheric events. However, you should keep in mind that most insurance companies ask that some of these measures be applied to ensure the maximum safety at home.
